"Long live living, if living can be this." ~The Cat Empire, "Miserere"
Well, I studied some pics and Japanese paintings of bamboo to see how they're structured, and then I blocked in shapes one by one with the pen tool, and then refined the outlines of those shapes so they're crisper. Then I grouped parts together (like the bamboo segments) and moved them around where I liked. Since making one bamboo was kinda tedious, I duplicated ones I already made, but flipped them around and/or resized them around the picture. (I actually only vectored in 3 bamboo shoots.) For the leaves, I used a stock photo as a reference, and did the same procedure as with the bamboo shoots - such as blocking in the shapes and then duplicating and rearranging them to go wherever. Then I adjusted the opacities on different bamboos and finished with a green gradient map and some light/dark gradients for the lighting. Whew, that about covers it.
Oh yeah, I also made an inverse version where the bamboos are light green and the bg dark.
