A request from my sister to illustrate the bamboo we saw in Japan. She really wants me to paint it, but right now I don't have the resources for that, so here is a photoshop version. My first vector, whee! It's supposed to be stylized and simple. It's also a wallpaper in my laptop resolution (1280x800), so download if you want it that size.

Edit: the inversed version can be found here: [link]

Thanks. :) This one's basically the pen tool and gradients.

:D
Well, I studied some pics and Japanese paintings of bamboo to see how they're structured, and then I blocked in shapes one by one with the pen tool, and then refined the outlines of those shapes so they're crisper. Then I grouped parts together (like the bamboo segments) and moved them around where I liked. Since making one bamboo was kinda tedious, I duplicated ones I already made, but flipped them around and/or resized them around the picture. (I actually only vectored in 3 bamboo shoots.) For the leaves, I used a stock photo as a reference, and did the same procedure as with the bamboo shoots - such as blocking in the shapes and then duplicating and rearranging them to go wherever. Then I adjusted the opacities on different bamboos and finished with a green gradient map and some light/dark gradients for the lighting. Whew, that about covers it. ^^;

Oh yeah, I also made an inverse version where the bamboos are light green and the bg dark.
ooh, it's perfect! :w00t:
