Description
My first technical drawing for the Science Illustration graduate program! Already the 2nd week in the program! The specimen is a lovely Achemon Sphinx moth (Eumorpha achemon) checked out from UCSC's natural sciences collection. It's very beautiful and velvety soft in person! I could not resist choosing this guy from all the other insects there.
The bottom one is the original graphite illustration and the top one has been colored in photoshop.
Process: the moth was sketched using a 1/2 inch plexiglass grid set-up and enlarged to a 1 inch grid with vellum and graph paper. (natural asymmetry is intentional) Then the sketch was transferred to smooth bristol (9x12 in) for graphite rendering. The final render took about 8 hours, layering pencils 4H, 2H, HB, 2B, and 4B (light to dark).
Expect more illustrations to come! We get to draw with microscopes too!
