Soaring Giants by MissNysha Soaring Giants by MissNysha
Interpretive panel assignment. Painted entirely in Photoshop using 4 of :iconadonihs: 's brushes: [link] (The 19 detailed painting brush, the 300 lighting brush, the 500 chalk brush, and the 30 hard ink brush)

I chose some of the huge birds you may see in the Monterey/Big Sur area, and I imagine this panel hypothetically placed somewhere in those dirt turn-outs/viewpoints on the edge of the cliffs of highway 1 there.

Lots of researching and hunting for references used here - the original is 24x36'' and I scaled the three heads to (approximately) life size. The flying birds are for simple body shape and field markings, and the background is quite simple too.

This was my first time drawing ugly birds!!! (except for the eagle) XD And it took about 3-4 hours per bird, many for the researching and writing the text, and too many for the overall layout. XP

Combined photoshop file is 1.1GB.

This is a wonderful illustration! I didn't know we got golden eagles here - and California condors :wow: I would love to see a wild one! I've only seen turkey vultures and some hawks around here :XD: Love their profile comparisons and the in-flight silhouettes are especially useful!

Thanks! I've seen golden eagles soaring on the way to the pinnacles - so there are some around! I have yet to see a condor though! :)

Gorgeous! I pulled up to one of those turnouts very early one morning to stretch my legs, and one of those HUGE California Condors flew right up near me and landed on the guardrail! It was maybe four feet from me ... I stood absolutley still since I had no idea what I was supposed to do and didn't want the bird thinking I was breakfast. lol We stared at eachother for a minute or two, then it made a sort of purring sound, which I imitated ... big mistake! It moved even closer, and the chicken that I am, I ran and dove into my car so fast that I conked my head on the door. LOL Poor animal probably was thinking, "These humans are just the weirdest species." But what a gorgeous bird ... and you captured it, and the others, brilliantly in your art. Great job!

Really neat idea! Love how it was executed as well. the simple background is very nice and effective. I also love each of the birds' profiles and how you have them soaring in the bg.

Thank you! The birds are actually VERY impressionistic up close (very loose brush strokes). I used a combo of various photo refs per bird to paint them though. I'm glad you like them. :)
